My 2c would be a plugin to reference an external monitoring system and display a status icon.
Absolutely NOT. as mentioned Netbox is SSoT. For an NMS function, use NMS. Netbox isn't a tool for actual state, it is a tool for intended state.
If you want something to audit/verify that the running state is compliant with the intended state, that is what an automation workflow for that purpose would be for.
I get that we would all like to have this information all in one place, but Netbox is designed as a source of truth and is emphatically not for monitoring. It would be better to have a plugin that can sync with monitoring software of another party or vice-versa.
